ChebyshevU

The Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind Un(x)U_n(x), defined by Un(cos⁡θ)sin⁡θ=sin⁡((n+1)θ)U_n(\cos\theta)\sin\theta = \sin((n+1)\theta). Provided by @enumeratio/analytic.

Domain: Special functions

Details
  • U0=1U_0 = 1, U1=2xU_1 = 2x, and Un+1=2x Un−Un−1U_{n+1} = 2x\,U_n - U_{n-1}: the recurrence of ChebyshevT from a different start. The coefficients are integers and the leading one is 2n2^n.
  • Un(cos⁡θ)=sin⁡((n+1)θ)sin⁡θU_n(\cos\theta) = \dfrac{\sin((n+1)\theta)}{\sin\theta}, so Un(1)=n+1U_n(1) = n + 1 and Un(−1)=(−1)n(n+1)U_n(-1) = (-1)^n (n+1).
  • With the first kind: Tn=12(Un−Un−2)T_n = \tfrac12(U_n - U_{n-2}), and Tn(x)2−(x2−1) Un−1(x)2=1T_n(x)^2 - (x^2-1)\,U_{n-1}(x)^2 = 1.
  • A negative order folds as Wolfram does: U−1=0U_{-1} = 0 and U−n=−Un−2U_{-n} = -U_{n-2} for n≥2n \ge 2.
  • At an integer nn and a symbolic or exact xx the result is the expanded polynomial. At a floating-point or complex xx the recurrence runs directly on the number.
  • A symbolic order stays unevaluated. The signature takes an integer order only; Wolfram continues UνU_\nu to non-integer ν\nu, and that is not implemented here.
